From Coast to Community: Discovering the Unique Rewards of Regional Policing

Moving from the fast-paced Gold Coast to begin her policing career in rural Mareeba in Far North Queensland, Constable Airlia immediately noticed the warmth of her new community.

“What struck me the most about coming to a regional community is how friendly and supportive everyone is. There are many opportunities to get involved in things outside of work and as well as within work,” she shares.

Policing in regional Queensland is a dynamic and rewarding career. Each day is different and could include covering vast distances, responding to livestock crime or bushfires, addressing domestic violence, and building connections with the local communities.

For Constable Airlia, the cultural understanding she’s gained through her work is a unique and enriching part of her role. “Building that cultural experience and understanding is something I value deeply,” she says.

Another unique and considerable benefit of working in a regional area is the potential to accelerate career growth.

“Outside the southeast corner, we don’t always have access to specialist units at jobs, so that gives us the opportunity to learn and grow much faster,” Constable Airlia explains. “It can help with promotions and working your way up through the ranks quicker.”

For those considering a career in the Queensland Police Service, Constable Airlia has practical advice: “Some days can be challenging. We don’t always see people on their best days. However, we’re here to help people and engage with the community.”

A policing career offers a breadth of opportunities. “You get paid to explore the state. No two days are ever the same, and you get to go home with the satisfaction of knowing you’ve helped people.”

Whether it’s making a difference, building a diverse and meaningful career, or embracing the adventure of regional life, policing opens doors to a future full of possibility.
