Aurecon shapes legacy by supporting UNIQ future for girls

UNIQ You, a Queensland-based not-for-profit, is excited to announce Aurecon as its next partner. UNIQ You connects high school girls and their educators with women working in industries and roles under-represented by women.

By increasing Years 9-12 girls’ exposure and access to women with STEM skills that can be applied across all industries, UNIQ You is on a mission to increase girls’ confidence to engage with careers and pathways they otherwise might not consider viable options because of their gender.

Aurecon has a major presence in the construction industry, and while we know the gender imbalance is narrowing, current numbers suggest critical action is needed to ensure pipelining activities are targeted and robust, to promote the inclusion of women.

Aurecon CEO William Cox believes humanity depends on engineering, and that companies have a responsibility to reflect diverse ideas and outlooks from the inside out:

‘The partnership is a recent example of how we champion diversity and inclusion in practice at Aurecon. We believe having diverse teams enables us to frame and solve our clients’ and society’s most complex problems in unconventional and distinctive ways. UNIQ You is an important initiative to invest in ensuring we see sustainable growth in gender equity in STEM that Aurecon is keen to champion.

Gender equality is core to our pursuit of diversity and inclusion, which is supported with a range of initiatives encouraging female representation across all levels at the company. If we want to accelerate gender diversity at the helm of STEM tomorrow, we need to ensure a strong inflow of young women embarking on the STEM journey today.’

Aurecon was named Australasia’s most innovative company by the Australian Financial Review in 2020, and UNIQ You CEO Tanya Meessmann is excited to see future-forward insights shared with Years 9-12 girls:

The world of engineering in the 21st Century is fascinating, innovative and ground-breaking. The variety of opportunities for young girls after high-school in this space is exciting and diverse.  However, without increased understanding of the role and the sectors it can be applied to, and without wide-spread visibility of women working in engineering, girls will continue to miss out on these opportunities

‘Our partnership with Aurecon and the opportunity to provide high-school girls access to Advisors to build their knowledge, confidence and intent to pursue a pathway into engineering within the construction sector is a fantastic step forward. We’re incredibly grateful for the show of support from such a key player in Australia’s construction landscape.’

Aurecon joins 15 other partners from across 10 industries to significantly increase the pipeline of female talent into spaces at the forefront of progress.
