Life as a police recruit
From your first day as a recruit to serving your community as a frontline officer, the journey is both challenging and rewarding.
Your policing career begins with the approximately 8-month Recruit Training Program at one of the QPS academies in Brisbane or Townsville.
Training starts with a focus on theory and legislation, giving you an understanding of the legal framework that underpins policing in Queensland. You’ll progress to the skills block, where you’ll develop practical abilities such as physical skills, driver training, firearms handling, and field craft.
The final stage of the program focuses on scenario-based training, where you’ll apply your theory and practical skills to realistic scenarios that mirror situations officers respond to day-to-day on the frontline.
General Duties and beyond
After graduating from the academy, you’ll commence the 12-month First Year Constable Program as a General Duties (GDs) officer, under the guidance of experienced Field Training Officers.
General Duties officers are the backbone of the QPS and you’ll complete at least 3 years in GDs, honing your abilities and building a strong foundation for your career.
Through this hands-on, frontline experience, you’ll continue to develop your problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills, gaining a deeper understanding of the diverse needs of the community as you respond to calls for service.
You’ll handle a wide range of responsibilities, from attending incidents and making arrests to conducting interviews and completing detailed reports.
Once you’ve completed your minimum 3-year General Duties tenure, career possibilities expand significantly, and you may apply for specialist roles as vacancies arise.
The QPS offers a wide range of specialist opportunities, including positions in forensics, water police, criminal investigations, dog squad, highway patrol, mounted police and many more.
