Meet Taylor

She wakes up in disbelief that she gets paid to do this job.

Taylor McCarthy-Smith is a Firefighter with Queensland Fire Department. Nine months in, and she already calls it the best job in the world.

Yes, it’s a male dominated industry, but women are fighters too, and we have the power to change that.

Although less than 5% of career firefighters in Australian fire services are women, every one of them earns respect through capability, teamwork and trust on the fireground. (Source: Wikipedia)

From road crash rescue to hazardous materials, floodwater response to community safety, firefighting is far more than most people realise. And Taylor is proud to stand alongside experienced men and women who look out for each other like family.

Gender equity in emergency services is not about adjusting the entry requirements. It is about holding everyone to the same expectations (or standards), and respecting competence, work ethic and trust on the fireground, regardless of gender.

Her advice to other women?
Work hard.
If you get knocked back, apply again.
Do your research.
Back yourself.

Save this if you need a reminder to back yourself.
