I went to uni after finishing Yr 12 to do a Bachelor of Primary Education. This wasn’t what I was looking for so I dropped out of uni and took on a role as an Admin Assistant. I soon realised after a few years doing office work that I didn’t want to be stuck inside all day. I always wanted to be a Ranger so started looking at how to get into this role. After this I had a few different jobs before I was lucky enough to get a traineeship for a Cert I in Conservation and Land Management which gave me a start. Not long after, I completed this I applied for a traineeship with Seqwater as a Trainee Ranger and was successful. I have now been with Seqwater for nearly 4 years and have completed a Cert III in Conservation and Land Management and gained a heap of experience while working here.
About my role
This role involves day to day tasks like cleaning, mowing, spraying weeds and maintenance of recreation areas. You will spend a lot of time during the warmer months of the year out on the boat spraying aquatic weeds in the lake. During busy periods like weekends and school holidays you also do lake patrols on the boat with the compliance team to make sure everyone is safe and doing the right thing. Through the winter months you conduct planned burns to reduce the amount of fuel on ground to prevent bushfires through spring/summer. A fair bit of this job involves talking to the public and answering any questions they have or chasing them out of places they shouldn’t be in. You also get trained as backup dam operator for when it floods. This role gets to work in a variety of different areas as sometimes you are required to help out teams in other regions of Seqwater.
