I’m a little bit addicted to technology and building software.
I took a round-about path to doing what I love, abandoning my first university degree (Teaching) and working other jobs for a few years. I finally decided to go back to university to do what deep down I knew I’d really always wanted – to work with computers and technology. From my very first computer programming subject I was hooked, and haven't looked back since.
I started working at TechnologyOne as a Graduate Software Engineer straight out of university, building new features into our existing software products to make life simpler for our customers. I worked my way up to architecting my own software product, and leading a team of developers to help me build it.
About my role
If you think about software engineering as building complex structures out of Lego, then the Software Architect is the person that designs and draws up the plans for those structures. They decide what types of Lego bricks to use, figure out the best way to build the structure, and then work with other Software Engineers to help put the bricks together following their design.
Software Architects work closely with Product Owners, UX Designers and other Software Engineers to build awesome software applications that make life easier for their users. Having grown from their own experiences as a Software Engineer they are often technical leaders in their field, mentoring and guiding other Software Engineers on their own career journeys.
