About me

  • Regional Background

I am an Operational and Reporting Insights Engineer working for Urban Utilities. From a young age I knew I wanted to do something in the science and mathematics field but wasn’t sure what that could mean. Thanks to the guidance of various teachers in high school I was able to narrow down my interests and enrol in Chemical Engineering at the University of Queensland. Here, I solidified Chemical Engineering was in fact the path for me, combining team work, optimisation, environmental sustainability and all the technical aspects of science and maths. Career paths for Chemical Engineers can vary greatly and it was during my 2nd year I developed a passion for the water and wastewater sector.

I have worked through various parts of Urban Utilities as a graduate engineer and am currently taking up my first “real” role helping develop insights and performance dashboards for our maintenance and operational sides of the business.

About my role

  • Flexible
  • Imaginative
  • Logical
  • Reliable
  • Sociable

The Operational and Reporting Insights Engineer does different tasks everyday. A key part of this positon is “making things better”. This role creates visualisations with data that may not have been available before, which gives our Operational and Maintenance team the ability to make quick and justified decisions. This role provides opportunities to learn and dive into both water and wastewater aspects.

Day to day, this role engages with different parts of our business to see what people need (a lot of talking is involved). The actual work involves uncovering where our data is stored, whether that is in various databases, a manual excel sheet on someone’s computer - or perhaps it isn’t anywhere just yet. The task is then to turn that data into easily digestible visualisations and liase with the subject matter owner to see if this was the type of product there were envisioning.
